SERENDIPITY WINES: WHAT A WONDERFULL WORLD
33 Golden Medals assigned at the end of the 1st International Oenological Competition “Serendipity Wines”
The 1st International Oenological Competition “Serendipity Wines” 2019 took place last 17th May 2019 in Scanzorosciate (Bergamo). The samples enrolled in the competition were 124 and 40 judges from 14 international Countries tasted them.
10 Countries enrolled their straw, fortified and aromatized wines in a competition that has already been defined as a brave experiment in the oenological competitions panorama. “OIV itself, defining us experimenter decided to take part to our event as a special supervisor evaluating the chance of a patronage for further editions” said Enrico Rota, president of the Association of Road of Valcalepio Wine and Bergamo’s Flavors.
Serendipity Wines was born from an idea of the oenologist Sergio Cantoni and aims at giving the chance to people to discover all those wines that are difficult to meet in the everyday life.
Serendipity Wines was born to foster the unexpected and pleasant meeting with special wines that move, touch and surprise. “These are wines” states Cantoni “that are deeply rooted in the oenological culture and tradition of many Countries. These wines represent the most ancient and traditional heritage of such countries. We mostly heard about these wines but in many cases it is really difficult to have the chance to taste and know them for real”. Here is why the organization decided to host the 1st edition of this competition in Scanzorosciate, the crib of Moscato di Scanzo DOCG, a small and precious production in the oenological reality of Bergamo.
Serendipity Wines lasted 3 days and the main characters of the competition were not only the 124 international samples enrolled but also the turistical, cultural and natural beauties of Bergamo region. The 40 international judges (technicians and journalists) came to Bergamo from 14 Countries around the world and had the chance to discover some of Bergamo region’s pearls such as Trescore Balneario and Lovere and to taste the amazing wines and foods produced in the region.
Two were the main events in the competition: the official tasting of the 4 committees called in Scanzorosciate on Friday 17th May 2019 and the symposium focused on “An Overview on Serendipity Wines Panorama” held on Saturday 18th May 2019 in Scanzorosciate. At the end of the symposium the organization announced the awarded wines.
Here are some numbers: 33 golden medals awarded; 29 golden medals awarded to Italy, 2 to Serbia and one each to Austria and Hungary. 5 silver medals awarded: 4 to Italy and 1 to Portugal. 5 Press Prizes were given to 3 wines produced in Italy, 1 wine produced in Austria and 1 wine produced in Hungary.
The official results are available on www.serendipitywines.it divided into the 6 categories established by the regulation (Straw Red Dry Still Wines, Straw White Dry Still Wines, Straw White Dry Still Wines, Straw Red Sweet Still Wines, Straw White Sweet Still Wines, Fortified Wines and Aromatized Wines).
The awarded wines were collected in a public tasting desk in San Paolo d’Argon ex-monastery on Saturday 18th May and Sunday 19th May 2019.
A special thanks goes to the institutions that supported the competition: the Association of Road of Valcalepio Wine and Bergamo’s Flavors, Lombardy Region, Province of Bergamo, Bergamo Chamber of Commerce and Scanzorosciate and San Paolo d’Argon Municipality.
The pleasure of discovery something unexpected and unpredictable.
The incredible discovery of something pleasant while searching for something else.
The luck that takes the form of discovering valuable or pleasant things that are not looked for or while looking for something else.
This is Serendipity.
The term is an everyday one in the English language nowadays but its origins are antique and charming. The first who used this term was Horace Walpole but he didn’t invent the term, he got inspired by a traditional Persian fairy tales called "The Three Princes of Serendip". The fairy tales tells the story of three young princes that found out by chance unexpected thing during their heroic adventures.
More recently the term "serendipity" entered the scientific universe too. It is often applied to inventions made by chance rather than intent. We could say that in quite every discovery, like in any other aspect of our life, there's a casual element. That casual element is called Serendipity.
This was the inspiration for the birth of the 1st International Oenological Competition “Serendipity Wines”. The organizers aim at giving the chance to people to discover all those wines that are difficult to meet in the everyday life.

More specifically, the categories of wines admitted to the 1st International Oenological Competition “Serendipity Wines” are straw, fortified and aromatized wines.
All these wines were called in many different ways in the last years: meditation wines, relaxation wines, conversation wines ... we definitely prefer to call them Serendipity Wines.Unexpected wines that positively surprise you and move you during and after the tasting.
The International Oenological Competition “Serendipity Wines” is promoted by the Association Road of Valcalepio Wine and Bergamo’s Flavors under the supervision of Organisation de la Vigne et du Vin (OIV) and with the technical partnership of Centro Studi Assaggiatori di Brescia.
The structure of “Serendipity Wines” is quite full and aims at describing not only the wines enrolled in the competition but the hosting region too, that is Bergamo Province.
The enrolled wines will be tasted by highly qualified judges divided into committees. The committees, following what stated by the Regulation, will be composed by the majority of technicians (oenologists, producers, oenotechnicians), sommeliers, food & wine journalists and opinion leader. The majority of judges must also be foreigners.
The results of the tastings will be announced on Saturday morning, at the end of a symposium, and a tasting desk with the awarded wines will be opened to the public during the afternoon.
